Curcumin supplements and faster muscle recovery. Reach your fitness goals faster
Curcumin is the primary active ingredient in Turmeric, with research showing it has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. We know that antioxidants may prevent or delay cell damage by reducing oxidative stress caused by free radicals, and that anti-inflammatories reduce redness, swelling, and pain.
With this in mind, it’s exciting to consider the potential benefits that curcumin supplements might have on muscle and joint recovery after exercise.
Reducing muscle pain and inflammation after a workout. Secret weapon? Curcumin.
Whether you started exercising more frequently during lockdown or are a seasoned athlete, muscle fatigue affects all of us, and can impact your future workouts. Whilst you should try and prevent sore muscles by always warming up and cooling down with plenty of stretches (YouTube is a great place to find stretching basics), reports show that taking curcumin supplements can aid recovery.
A study by Michael Ash in Clinical Education explains that curcumin had a noticeable impact in a study on young, physically fit individuals. Those given curcumin (between 50-200g) reported a lower level of pain after downhill running, than those who were given a placebo, as well as having a lower level of creatine kinase. Creatine kinase is an enzyme that occurs alongside damaged muscles, suggesting a higher level of muscle weakness amongst athletes who were not given Curcumin.
Mother Nature's gift: reduce the damage done by overexertion with natural turmeric curcumin
Curcumin supplements can also reduce damage done by over training, studies show. When we overly physically exert ourselves, our muscles get microscopic tears and rips. This isn’t all bad as our muscles grow stronger through healing and repairing, but it can cause damaged muscles if you don’t take care. Curcumin’s anti-inflamatory properties can help you recover faster, reducing pain and swelling, and helping you reach your fitness goals faster.
Both these studies reference that curcumin is only beneficial if it’s natural bioavailability is enhanced by other compounds, such as piperene (the active ingredient in black pepper). Your Bodhi’s curcumin tablets contain 5mg of piperine for exactly this reason!
